- The department recognises that school libraries are an important educational and wellbeing resource for students.
- School libraries make a direct contribution to achieving the objectives of the department’s Our Plan for NSW Public Education.
- Principals are responsible for planning, resourcing and budgeting so that their school library meets the needs of their students and school community.
- The department employs specialist teacher librarians who collaborate with teaching colleagues to support planning and implement the teaching and learning programs of schools.
- The department provides funding for teacher librarian hours based on the number of students enrolled at a school.

- The Executive Director, Teaching Quality and Impact monitors the implementation of this policy, regularly reviews its contents to ensure relevance and accuracy, and updates it as needed.
